Things to keep in mind when choosing a cake

Author:

1. Try to avoid buying cakes that contain hydrogenated vegetable oil. Currently, most cakes topped with "fresh milk" actually use hydrogenated vegetable oil, and the flaky crust underneath often includes either hydrogenated vegetable oil or margarine. A more traditional choice would be to opt for real whipped cream and butter instead.

2. Try to avoid buying puff pastry cakes whenever possible. Puff pastry typically requires the addition of large amounts of fat and is very low in nutritional value. In most cases today, these cakes contain vegetable shortening, which is loaded with trans fats. While both are high-energy foods, cheesecake is a slightly better choice—after all, cheese itself provides ample calcium, vitamins A and D, B-complex vitamins, and protein. In contrast, shortening offers nothing but a hefty dose of harmful trans fats.

3. When buying cakes at the supermarket, be sure to check the expiration date and try to purchase from reputable stores.
