Analysis of Short-Shelf-Life Bread Market Trends
Author:
The outlook for China's domestic bread market is promising. According to research reports from Western Securities, from 2004 to 2019, China's bread industry experienced a compound annual growth rate of 11%, outpacing traditional fast-moving consumer goods categories such as baijiu (Chinese liquor), beer, dairy products, and seasonings. Meanwhile, per capita bread consumption in China has surged from less than 1 kg in 2008 to 1.9 kg in 2019—nearly doubling over the span of 12 years.
Among them, bread is categorized into three types based on shelf life: long-life, with a shelf life of 6 months or more; medium-life, lasting 3 to 6 months; and short-life, with a shelf life of 1 to 7 days. Taoli Bread’s flagship product, however, is its short-life sealed bread, which maintains freshness for 3 to 7 days in summer and 5 to 12 days in winter. This type of short-life bread boasts a superior taste compared to traditional long-life varieties from brands like Dali Garden and Panpan, while also containing fewer preservatives—making it an ideal choice for consumers who prioritize health and flavor. As the trend toward replacing long- and medium-life bread with short-life options continues to gain momentum, the future market size for short-life bread is highly likely to keep growing.
